Q: What is the story behind Decorated on Main? How long has your business been operating in
Muskoka?
I initially started as a boutique children’s store called 4 Muskoka Kids in 2008 on Brunel Rd. Eventually, I purchased our current building and moved the business there. There, I started to shift from children’s clothing to home décor and joined the Saturday Afternoons franchise in 2011. After a little while, I decided to go out on my own and re-brand as Decorated on Main to incorporate everything I love into one boutique space!
Q: What is your connection to the Huntsville community and the Muskoka region? Why did you decide to open your business here?
I haven’t always lived in Huntsville, but have strong ties to the area. Our home was built here in 2001 and I moved here with my husband and 4 children. We always loved the sense of community in Huntsville and the many opportunities for our family to grow. We have continued to expand our connections to the community through various business ventures and have even watched some of our kids do the same!
Q: Where did the inspiration for Decorated on Main come from?
I have always had a love for shopping, home décor and home design! While I loved my children’s boutique and working with the Saturday Afternoons franchise, I wanted to start something that could encompass all my passions in one place. Decorated on Main doesn’t only have home décor, but a children’s section, ladies’ fashion and accessories, and much more!
Q: Have you always had a passion for interiors, decor and fashion accessories?
Yes, I have, but was previously an elementary school teacher. My first big design project was our home in 2001, where I discovered how much I truly loved interior design. After moving away from teaching I was able to explore these passions further and Decorated on Main was born!
Q: What are the items in your store influenced by? Seasons? Muskoka? Common Trends?
With home décor and fashion, we have seasonal items and also basics that work year-round. Many of our items reflect Muskoka style with buffalo check, wildlife, and cottage themed décor. Each item is carefully picked by me, to create a curated collection of up to date and trending items!
Q: Tell us more about the team that supports Decorated on Main?
Our team at Decorated on Main has always been very close. My Mom and I have worked at the store together since it opened, alongside 2 friends. Our customers have definitely gotten to know our staff over the years, and they’re one of the things that make Decorated on Main such a welcoming and warm space!
Q: What are some of the most popular staple items your store carries?
Customers love our Reallite Candles – they are realistic, flameless candles with a remote and timer! We also carry custom lake signs that residents and cottagers can’t get enough of!
Q: Who are the vendors/artists you work with to support Decorated on Main? Are any of them local?
I work with many suppliers from all over. One local connection is Patti Parker’s cards! We have a beautiful selection of her cards featuring photos she has taken. These cards feature photography of local wildlife and plants -an amazing way to send someone a piece of Muskoka! We also work with other companies that refurbish Ontario barnboard, and a local sign maker for our custom lake signs!
Q: Can you tell us what community means to you
To me, community is working with and supporting those around you. Personally, I have always made it my priority to shop local, dine local and act as an integral part of the community since we moved here! I so appreciate all my customers both local and seasonal that do the same to support Decorated on Main.
Q: What are some of your favourite things to do in the Muskoka region? What are your favourite places to visit?
We have a cottage on Lake of Bays and love spending time on the lake! When I am not thinking about a new design project, I can often be found walking or hiking with my two dogs! During the summer season, I also love to get out and about checking out new stores in Muskoka!
